On Monday, May 12th, the Galena Boys Golf Team participated in the Class 1 District 3 Boys Championship Qualifier at Schifferdecker Golf Course in Joplin, MO. The team finished in 10th place out of 21 competing teams.
Bobby Harris led the team with an impressive performance, finishing tied for 17th place with a score of 85. This accomplishment qualifies him for the upcoming State Championship Tournament, which will be held next week at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club in New Bloomfield, MO. Other team members also contributed to the effort, with Austin Mathew finishing 42nd with a score of 98, Brody Gallion finishing 61st with a 111, Rhett Hickman finishing 69th with a 119, and Jacob Coones finishing 88th with a 140.
We asked Scott Brakebill (the Galena bears boys golf coach) how he felt about the meet and he said, “Schifferdecker Golf Course is a very difficult course to score a low round. The greens are small and fast, making it tough to place the ball close to the pins. As a group, we started off slow but each of our golfers kept their focus and did not give up. To finish in 10th place out of 21 teams competing is very respectable and they should be proud of their effort. As a golf team, we are very proud that Bobby Harris Jr, will be representing Galena Golf at the State Golf Championships next week. He had a great practice round on Sunday and carried that over into his play for Monday's qualifying round. I am excited to see him continue to play well this coming week at Meadow Lake.”
The tournament featured 91 golfers, making the competition fierce. The Galena Boys team demonstrated their commitment and sportsmanship throughout the event. Bobby Harris's qualification for the State Championship Tournament is a significant achievement, and the team and community are excited to support him as he represents Galena on the state level.
